Here are the key updates from January 21, Sunday:
PKL: Tamil Thalaivas thrash Bengaluru Bulls; Puneri Paltan too good for Gujarat Giants
Bengaluru Bulls spurned a massive opportunity to go into the top six in the PKL S10 standings, as they endured a heavy defeat at the hands of Tamil Thalaivas, whose two big-name raiders Narendar Kandola and Ajinkya Pawar produced 25 points between them, as they won 45-28.
Puneri Paltan meanwhile closed the gap at the top of the PKL to one point, while having a game in hand, as they proved too good for Gujarat Giants in Hyderabad on Sunday evening.
Super Cup: Mumbai City beat Chennaiyin 1-0 to make semifinal
Valpuia scored the only goal of the game as Mumbai City FC beat Chennaiyin FC 1-0, to qualify for the semifinal of the Super Cup. Chennaiyin had more chances, and dominated play more against a young Mumbai City side, but the defending ISL league shield winners stood firm, to ensure that they took home the three points from a game in which even a draw would’ve sent them through to the last four.
Man Singh becomes second Indian man to win gold at Asian Marathon Championships
Man Singh became only the second Indian man to clinch a gold medal at the Asian Marathon Championships as he won the race with a personal best in Hong Kong. The 34-year-old clocked two hours, 14 minutes and 19 seconds (2:14:19) to win the competition. His earlier best was 2:16:58, which he had clocked while finishing 11th in the Mumbai Marathon last year.
Gopi Thonakal was the first Indian man to win the Asian Marathon Championships title in 2017. He had clocked 2:15:48 to win the gold in Dongguan, China. Man Singh’s time on Sunday was below the Paris Olympics qualifying mark of 2:08:10. He had finished eighth in the Hangzhou Asian Games last year with a time of 2:16:59.
Satwik-Chirag lose India Open final
After a stellar opening game, India’s top men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty lost their way to lose their third consecutive final, going down 21-15, 11-21, 18-21 against reigning world champions Seo Seungjae and Kang Minhyuk of South Korea. You can relive the game as it happened, with the report, here.
Super Cup: Punjab and Gokulam Kerala share spoils
In an inconsequential game for both eliminated sides, Punjab FC and Gokulam Kerala played out a goalless draw in their final Group C encounter. Punjab finished third in the group with two points while Gokulam finished last with one point. There was late drama after Gokulam were reduced to 10 men in the 88th minute after Basit Bhat’s red card, but they survived the last few minutes, with Luka Macjen missing a golden chance to steal the win.
